Project Verdant: Introduction
A lot has happened since 2019 and I'm sure many others probably feel the same. Since before 2019 I've been observing the supply chain and it's quirks and it's now even more quirky and rickety. On top of that several countries around the world are piloting one means of odd control or another whether it be the 15 minute city or the new Nigerian digital currency coupled with severe Nigerian ATM withdraw restrictions. I don't think the "well, that's over there" argument for apathy will prove out anymore after seeing all nations use a very similar playbook in addressing an "pandemic" in near lockstep unison.
The ability to more easily supplement home food supply at a fraction of the cost of the current supply chain will become an increasingly attractive concept to many. Relying on mega farmers and long transport chains to supply "just in time" food can become a bit of a stretch as was made very clear in the "pandemic".
Project Verdant will open source information and designs that will make it easier to review several different systems and implement a growing system that can fit personal situations.
The origination of the project started with replicating the great work of B. A. Kratky ( https://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/hawaii/downloads/three_non-circulating_hydroponic_methods_for_growing_lettuce.pdf ). Including the Kratky method, the project will review multiple other approaches for growing hyper-local produce easily.
A large emphasis will be placed on cheap and readily available supplies that will pay system overhead off quickly.
